As quickly as City Park Grille opened its doors a few months ago, the restaurant has closed its doors. The T&G broke the story this morning but the article is short on reasons. My one experience at City Park Grille was marred by a poor beer selection, expensive prices for only decent food, and mostly mediocre service, but it is still surprising to see the restaurant close. Most downtown restaurants this weekend did quite a business, with the Democratic Convention marching into town and filling up every table and bar stool (friends of mine were turned away from a reservation made weeks ago at Armsby Abbey because there just wasn’t any room — Armsby still made it up to them by transferring the reservation to Bocado, which is what good restaurants do). So, it comes as quite a surprise when the head chef is quoted as saying that they did 1,000 plates on Saturday night.
I have mixed feelings. I am pleased that an overpriced, mediocre restaurant is closing, but at the same time, I am really disappointed that yet another business cannot get started in downtown Worcester. You would imagine that the owners would have had a longer committment given the opportunity that the particular corner — once used by McFaddens — provides. If a restaurant can stay open for three years in that location, it could be on its way to becoming one of the most vibrant corners in the city of Worcester. But, there’s no doubt, a short term commitment to a restaurant on Front Street is never going to pan out.
